What is an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy?

An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (or simply endoscopy) is an outpatient procedure in which I will examine the esophagus, stomach, and part of the duodenum. I recommend it if you have pain in the abdomen, reflux, vomiting or bleeding. I also recommend it if you want to know how intestinal metaplasia or Barrett’s esophagus follows.

What should I do before an endoscopy?

For the exam to be successful and safe, you need to fast for 8 hours so that you do not have food in your stomach at the time of the exam and come accompanied so that we can sedate you.

How is endoscopy done at the Endoscopy and Colonoscopy Center in Medellín?

During the exam you will be asleep and you will not feel anything. We will be taking care of you all the time

To do the endoscopy I use a special, flexible, 9 mm diameter instrument called an endoscope. It starts in the mouth and then moves to the throat and esophagus. Then it reaches the stomach and finally the small intestine. During the procedure I will examine you carefully and systematically. In the stomach I will take a tissue sample (biopsy) to find out if you have gastritis or Helicobacter pylori bacteria. On average it lasts about 7 minutes.

What happens after an Endoscopy?

Once the procedure is finished, you will be taken to a recovery room. You will remain there until the effects of the sedation wear off. Then, you will be discharged along with your companion.
