Small Bowel capsule endoscopy (PillCam)

Small bowell capsule endoscopy (Pillcam) is the test you’ve been looking for.

You have had abdominal pain, diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome for a long time. All your exams have gone well and you feel frustrated and at the same time worried that something has been overlooked. If this happens to you, I ask you: Have you already had your small intestine examined? Have you seen the duodenum and the last part of the ileum, and ¿the other 7 meters of intestine?

I have always had this concern: If the small intestine is the most important organ in digestion and the immune system, why do we never examine it? Is it that he doesn’t get sick, nothing happens to him?  You probably have at least two normal colonoscopies but no small bowel capsule endoscopy exams.

I always want the exams to go well, but I frequently diagnose problems such as Crohn’s disease, polyps, inflammations, anatomical alterations, and other things in the capsule endoscopy.

What is capsule endoscopy (PillCam)?

It is a high-definition camera the size of a pill that, when swallowed, records video of the entire small intestine. Additionally, in this exam you can see the esophagus, stomach, and even the colon. It is a minimally invasive procedure, without pain or discomfort, without sedation and without radiation.

What does the exam consist of?

After you take the capsule, it sends the images to a data receiver that you will have strapped to your belt. When the exam is complete, we will download the information so we can view the video and give you a detailed report. The capsule is expelled spontaneously, is disposable and does not have to be recovered.
