Breath test for Lactose Intolerance

Breath test for lactose intolerance

You love milk or dairy products but you can’t even watch them because you’ll get sick. You wonder if this food is really not for you or if everything has been an injustice because even though you no longer eat anything with lactose, you are still sick.

The breath test for lactose intolerance is a non-invasive way to know if you digest lactose or not.

What if you have the ability to digest it? What if milk is a victim of what really affects you?

What is lactose malabsorption?

It is the inability to digest lactose, which is the sugar in milk. It occurs when your small intestine does not produce enough lactase (an enzyme or substance that helps in the digestion of lactose).

The symptoms of lactose intolerance or malabsorption are pain in the abdomen, bloating, flatulence or diarrhea when milk or any food containing it is consumed.

What does the test consist of?

Normally there are very small amounts of hydrogen in our breath. When milk is drunk and there is lactose intolerance, it is not digested in the small intestine and passes whole to the colon, where the bacteria found there degrade it, producing gases such as hydrogen, which is eliminated by the lungs through breathing and breath.

During the breath test you will take a small amount of lactose dissolved in water and you will be asked to blow into a device every 20 minutes for two hours or sometimes less.
